Steve Thorne was engaged by the City of Melbourne as an “Urban Design Specialist” to design streetscape improvements in North and West Melbourne as a result of anticipated traffic increases resulting from the construction of the new Westgate Tunnel project. The budget of $100 million is to offset the negative effects of this anticipated increase in traffic. Proposals included the introduction of new tram corridors, the creation of new parkland, the introduction of a network of separated bike lanes, increased street tree planting, new public open spaces and streetscape improvements. The City of Melbourne is currently engaging with local stakeholders and residents to endorse these proposals.
